Drunk Driving Fines and Penalties

Monetary Fines

One of the first things you know you’ll be receiving are fines and a lot of them. The reason judges give out fines is because they know that cash is a big deal to almost everybody and that it should hit home just by being required to pay for the fine. Normally the fines will be roughly $ 6,000 for the primary occurrence but that is only if you don’t have any legal representation, if you do then you can add that price onto the total cost.

Jail Time

This is what everyone dreads getting when they step in front of a judge and the truth of the matter is you’ll normally receive some jail time if there is man slaughter involved or if you had a kid in the car with you. What nobody allows is putting other people’s lives in danger and especially that of a minor. It is tough to say the amount of jail time you will eventually get for a DWI but for a lot of people it’s somewhere between a few days to a couple years depending on how bad the DWI is.

Probation

Probation is often times just for younger people and what happens is they are normally placed on a restriction as to when they must be home each night and how much time they have to spend in their house. The problem that lots of minors have with probation over the summer months is many judge’s will put them on house arrest which means they cannot leave their house at any time unless allowed to by the court. As you could imagine not having the option of leaving your home for a whole summer would be tragic for any teenage. Something that you have to know regarding probation is the judge is going to try to take away as of your freedom as possible without actually placing you in jail.

Suspended Drivers License

This is one of the penalties for DWI that practically everyone hates and the reason is not that complicated, they can’t drive anymore. Something that people hate regarding having their entitlement suspended is that if they don’t do something that they are supposed to in order to fulfill a judge’s order then their license will go from suspended to taken away, which means that you will have to surrender your license to the DMV.
